Silent G4's

How to void your warranty in 10 (or so) easy steps!

(disclaimer.. I am not responsible..... for anything....ever) (more disclaimer at the bottom)

I have a G4 Mirrored Drive Door Dual Ghz. It was loud but I did not have the vertigo inducing fan cycling problem nor did I have the migraine causing harmonic power supply. However, even though mine worked as advertised, I have never been one to leave well enough alone. So, armed with shovels and rakes and implements of destruction I proceeded to gleefully void my warranty by installing 2 120mm EnerMax fans from Sidewinder Computers. The pictures below are linked instead of displayed because they are quite large and you may not want to wait for all of them if you are on a slower connection

The Delta fans all removed from my G4! Delta fans Blow! (ok ok I can hear the groans...atilla the pun. would you have preferred I said Delta fans suck? They do you know... and they are damn loud when they do it)

The Delta fan that cools the opticals, replaced!!

The infamous Delta fans from the power supply, replaced!!

The Delta whopper of a fan from the lower case, replaced!!

The Thermaltake fans that you may have heard about, quieter but not quiet enough! Replaced!!

The Enermax fan in mid assembly. Note the removal of the lower left side of the fan for clearance.

Another mid assembly shot or the Enermax Fan.

Sealing up some air holes with the ever popular Duct Tape

Some more tape and a small piece of wood for more Air Control Another pic

The Elina fan in place! Elina fans kick butt!

The Enermax fan for the CPU/drives.

The Enermax PSU fan Running! I know it does not look it but I cannot figure out how to adjust shutter speed on my camera :-) My friend Roger laughs at me because I can build a Mac from the parts on my floor but cannot program my VCR, this shutter speed thing is in the same catagory!

Another running shot!

20 more cfm with about half the noise!

Both fans running. If you look at the lower right beside the drive cage you can see an orange reflection in the silver metal. This is the reflection of the light on the scsi terminator laying beneath the drives...meaning they are in fact running :-) Again with the shutter speed thing..... I can build you an ultra320 8 drive raid but just do NOT ask me to tape Frasier for you.....sigh

These are not exactly related to my fan project but while the G4 was open I snapped a few extras.... ok yes I am showing off

2 Seagate 10k cheetahs in a RAID 0 Stripe. (Rick, your objections to this setup have been noted :-)

Dual Optical drives on seperate ATA busses. I had a great need to be able to burn 2 CD's at once.... ok I didn't actually NEED to do that but I needed to be able to SAY that I could to aggravate the PC users at work.

GeForce 4 Ti power to drive my video! I NEED 128MB of video memory and the awesome power of the GeForce 4 Titanium in order to play 25 year old arcade classics that ran on 4 mhz with no accelleration to begin with

My 74gig 10k Cheetah boot drive, upside down in the ATA66 drive cage. Yes that is a half height drive...It took a fairly heavy hammer to wedge that bad boy in there!

Cable routing really sux in these Macs. I should have bought rounded cables.

A bit more disclaimer..

Do not try this at home, all Macs portrayed on this page are trained professionals. If you try this and hose your Mac it is not my fault. Because I did it does not necessarily mean you can do it. Because I did it does not even mean that I could do it again. So just don't do it at all. In fact, forget you ever saw this page.

Even more disclaimer

Don't do it.....just say NO!
